Brake Bleeding: Complete Guide

A brake system with trapped air is dangerous. Bleeding removes air and old contaminated fluid.

When to Bleed the Brakes?

SymptomUrgency
Spongy lever/pedalImmediate
Excessive travelImmediate
Loss of powerImmediate
Dark/cloudy fluidSchedule soon
Every 2 years (preventive)Regular maintenance

Types of Brake Fluid

TypeBaseDry Boiling PointUse
DOT 3Glycol205°CCars, basic bikes
DOT 4Glycol230°CStandard for motorcycles
DOT 5.1Glycol260°CRacing, intensive use

Traditional Method (Two People)

Procedure

  1. Fill the master cylinder reservoir with fresh fluid

  2. Person 1: At the lever/pedal

    • Pump slowly 5-6 times
